It was great to work alongside editors Mariano Báez and Marc Roca in this project. Watching other editors work from the director’s chair was a great learning curve for me. I did additional editing: pre-cutting scenes, and ultimately brought the film from fine cut to picture lock.

Being on the other side of the edit suite—further from the timeline screen and closer to the director’s monitor—was a big leap in understanding the editing process from the director’s point of view. How much is on the line, how tough it can be to deal with various executives pulling in disparate directions. A good documentary editor, as I understand it, is someone who can build these huge puzzles, discarding 99% of the pieces. But also someone who can communicate clearly with both directors and producers, who is willing to try things they are unsure of but that seem important to the director, and who ultimately helps bring their vision to life.
